Bringing the taphouse experience online

Creating a hub of content to engage the community through an authentic website that serves up beer and community

In 1984, Waterloo Brewing became the first craft brewer in Ontario. They made a name for themselves through their dedication to detail and pure ingredients. They make the kind of beer you’d bring home for game day or share with friends at the cottage. And they have just as much fun brewing it as they do drinking it.

Waterloo Brewing came to us to help them create the same authentic, fun experience at their impressive Kitchener taphouse on their website, a space that could be a hub not just for beer, but for community.

Before and after transformation

TOURING THE TAPHOUSE

In order to bring the taphouse experience to life online, we had to embrace it ourselves. Our team went onsite for a tour and were impressed by the large scale of the brewery, the team’s sustainability efforts, and the overall atmosphere of community, teamwork, and camaraderie. It was these feelings of craft, togetherness, and excellence that we knew we needed to convey in a big way on the website.

A SEAMLESS USER EXPERIENCE

Waterloo Brewing made it clear to us that they wanted the revamped site to be a hub for both their products and for community engagement

The information architecture for the site included dedicated landing pages with the kind of details we all want to know (like that Waterloo Dark pairs fantastically with fudge brownies), a page all about the brewery and the methods that make their beer sustainable and craft, and an updated online shopping experience.

Mapping of the new website and online store experience

Then, to engage and inspire the community, we developed new pages including online reservations booking for the taphouse, events page, taphouse menus and specials, and info about the free “Boar-to-Door” delivery.

The old Waterloo Brewing website was very limited in functionality. The team wasn’t able to change modules easily and seamlessly, making updating content a headache.

MODULAR DESIGN

The features and modular design system we created made it easy for Waterloo Brewing to evolve the site, managing content like promos, seasonals, and online menus, including a widget for COVID-19 updates, without having to come back to us for help.
